The highly anticipated lake bottom aeration system is arriving soon at Devils Lake. The Devil’s Lake Conservation Aeration project is designed to improve the water quality in Devil’s Lake which is an essential habitat for many native aquatic species including ESA listed Oregon Coast Coho Salmon. In addition, the lake is situated in a mostly urban location and has historically been used for recreation. Algae blooms in recent years have decreased the utilization of the lake for recreational purposes and have substantially degraded the habitat of the wildlife which depends on it. The Devils Lake Conservation Aeration Project aims to increase the quality of the water within the lake. The Devil’s Lake Water Improvement District (DLWID) initiated this project in 2014 and is currently entering the construction stage. DLWID has contracted with a professional Lake Restoration firm to install approximately 24 air diffusers connected by weighted tubing on the lake bed. Air will be supplied via a blower which will be located in a specially constructed enclosure near the lake shore. This project has been reviewed by several experts, including Dr. Alex Horne whom is a world-renowned limnologist. Aeration systems are one of the most common and effective methods of water quality management in lake systems and DLWID believes this project will have a profound improvement in the water quality of Devil’s Lake.
The installation is scheduled to begin on Monday October 22, 2018 and will take approximately 7-10 days to complete. You are welcome to observe the construction activities both on-shore and in the lake. The on-shore equipment installation will be located at the unimproved boat Ramp @ Sand Point located on the east side of Devils Lake. There will also be a ribbon cutting for the project announced shortly after the installation is completed.
